The Death Cafe

A free public event over morning tea to discuss death, dying, and grief in partnership.

WELCOME

What is the Death Cafe?

WHY

At HACA our mission is to improve healthcare support, access and knowledge for elders in regional and rural communities. Through community engagement we have heard the call and now provide free public events to discuss dying, death and grief in partnership.

WHAT

Join Dr John Rosenberg a UniSC senior lecturer and one of the HACA team and other facilitators to have good conversations about death and dying at the monthly Death Cafe events in and around Moreton Bay.

WHO

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join John, a registered nurse with a background in community-based palliative care, who teaches grief, nursing practice, and chronic disease management. He runs the Death Cafe, a free event, almost every month at various locations.

Death and dying

Talking about death and dying with people you care about is difficult particularly when it is your death you want to discuss. It is human nature to assume that bad things, death included is something that happens to other people. It is also human nature to want to plan, organise and have a certain amount of control over our own lives. These two impulses come head-to-head as we get older, and we find that we want a certain amount of understanding and say over our own death, but discussions around dying are often a taboo subject. This feeling that one can’t discuss their own death is very common. But when we don’t have honest conversations about this it can increase feelings of distress, confusion, loneliness and grief. At HACA we are working to build a more open and accepting society that encourages conversations about the reality of life’s journey.
