The A-Z of Beach AT

Your guide to accessing the Sunny Coast's beaches. Insider knowledge and reviews of the local beach assistive technology.

WELCOME

Life takes you down many paths, but the best ones lead to the beach

We will all, at some point in our lives need assistance to access the beach and we should strive to build a community that reflects our beach-based values and needs to do so.

WHY

Having access to, and enjoying the beach has a huge positive impact on our mental and physical wellbeing. We believe that everyone should have access to these beautiful spaces.

WHO

Some of our team members at HACA are occupational therapists. They make it their business (and research) to improve access to the beach for people with mobility impairments.

HOW

Through field work and community outreach, HACA researchers, 4th year occupational therapy students at UniSC and members of the community are putting together this guide to access the beaches on the Sunshine Coast.

Beach AT virtual makers space

When reading the Beach Assistive Technology (Beach AT) article in the HACA newsletter the reviewers were really inspired by the home made modifications that some of the community have come up with to meet their beach goals. It was abundantly clear to them that we need a Community Makers Space where people with all different expertise can meet to share and create their beach AT modifications that meet their individual beach goals. In lieu of a physical space, we think it would be a great start to host videos here on HACA where people can share their own ideas.

NEW UPDATES

“How to maximise older adults experience accessing beaches?”

Meet Abbie, Ebony, Kim and Andrea. They are 4th year Occupational Therapy students studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Inspired by the Beach Assistive Technology (Beach AT) article, they have embarked on a project to pool together local knowledge and information to help you access and get the best out of the local beaches.

Contribute to the project

If you are 65 years or over and live on the Sunshine Coast the team would like to hear from you about your experiences with accessing and enjoying the beach. If you would like to contribute to the project you will be asked your opinion and personal experience with accessing the Sunshine Coast beaches in an informal semi structured interview carried out by either Kim, Ebony, Abbie or Andrea. The information you provide will go towards delivering community initiatives that improve older adults beach experiences. If you would like to know more about the project please contact us.
