The Saving Legs and Lives Study

Investigate the benefits of a community-based cardiovascular rehabilitation program for people who have undergone lower limb revascularisation for peripheral artery disease (PAD).

What is this study about?

The Saving Legs & Lives study aims to investigate the benefits of referral to a community-based cardiovascular rehabilitation program on walking capacity and quality of life in people who have undergone lower limb revascularisation for peripheral artery disease (PAD).

What does the study involve?

This is a randomised-controlled trial. Participants will have a 50% chance of being randomised to either a community-based cardiovascular rehabilitation program or a usual care group. Participants randomised to the cardiovascular rehabilitation program will receive 2 supervised exercise sessions per week for 6-weeks, home-based exercise advice, and education sessions delivered by health specialists. Participants in the usual care group will continue to receive their usual care and medical advice from their local doctor and vascular surgeon.

Participants will also be asked to attend a total of 6 assessment visits at the University of the Sunshine Coast (Sippy Downs) and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital for walking tests, vascular function tests, and questionnaires.

What are the eligibility criteria?

You may be eligible for this study if you have undergone a lower limb revascularisation procedure (e.g., angioplasty, bypass graft) for PAD in the previous 12 months.

If you are eligible and consent to this study the team will provide support to cover cost of parking or travel to assessment visits (up to $20 per visit). You will also receive individualised exercise program as part of the Integrated Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Research program.
